Before Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States of America
Abraham Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, and lived with his two parents Nancy Hanks, his sister and his father Tomas Lincoln who was an uneducated man. His mother died in 1818 and as a result Tomas married Sarah Johnston who moved in with her three children. Abe's family moved three times during his childhood and his father made Abe work very hard as a result, Lincoln even stated “had an axe put into his hands…. And till within his twenty-third year… was almost constantly handling the most useful instrument”. His father never let him go to school and disapproved of his learning and foremost hated his reading, but his mother Sarah encouraged him to further his education and to continue reading and improve his intellect and she was his best friend in the world, she died when Abe Lincoln was nine years old.
When Abe Lincoln reached the legal age to leave home which was 21 he left and was able to successfully pass the Illinois bar (test to become a lawyer). In 1834 he moved to Salem, Illinois where he was elected in to the State House of Representatives for 3 years and then decided to become registered lawyer and then moved to Springfield(new State Capital). He then moved to Kentucky where he met and married his wife Marry Todd and was elected into U.S Congress by 1847. After the 2 year term he returned to Springfield to re-practice law for 5 years. In 1856 he was runner up for Vice President for the Republicans. In 1858 he was nominated for US Senator of Illinois but lost. In 1860 he was finally elected President of the United States.
